Article One: NORAS Winter 2005 identifies the latest trends amongst online job seekers by Tim Elkington

The latest results of the National Online Recruitment Audience Survey, NORAS Winter 2005, using data gathered from 18,235 online job seekers, show that significant numbers of candidates are taking advantage of the wide range of services offered by commercial job boards.

30% of online job seekers register for further services, such as setting up alerts to receive relevant jobs by email or uploading CV’s so that they can be searched by employers. In addition to registering for additional services 33% of online job seekers use job boards to obtain information on potential employers, 24% to make salary comparisons, 20% to keep up to date with developments in their industry sector, 18% to obtain career advice and 13% to find out about recruitment consultancies. Only 32% of visitors to online recruitment sites say that they only visit job boards to look for jobs – demonstrating that over two thirds of online job seekers are interested in the additional content and functionality offered by online recruitment sties.

The latest results of the UK’s largest online recruitment research project, managed by the online recruitment specialists Enhance Media, also show an increasing brand loyalty amongst online job seekers. The average number of sites visited by active online job seekers has fallen from seven in 2004 to six in 2005 while 11% of repeat visitors state that they have chosen to revisit a particular site because they have previously got an interview or job through that site.

This figure shows the emergence of brand loyalty within the online recruitment market due to the positive experiences of online job seekers. The most popular reasons for choosing to revisit sites also indicate that job seekers are making positive choices regarding online recruitment sites – 23% of visitors chose to revisit a site because they felt it had the best selection of jobs for them while 20% revisited a site because they thought it was easy to use.

In addition to identifying the latest trends amongst online job seekers NORAS provides recruiters with comparable information regarding online recruitment sites so that they can make more informed advertising decisions based on audience profile and size. All 24 sites that participated in NORAS Winter 2005 submitted an ABC ELECTRONIC audit that showed the size of their audiences in terms of Unique Users while a sample of their users also completed a demographic questionnaire that was served across all sites.

The results of the survey provide advertisers with independently gathered comparable information on all 24 sites. This means that recruiters wanting to use this type of information to make advertising decisions no longer have to rely on information generated by the job boards themselves, which can vary in quality from site to site, but have free access to objective and robust data.

The 24 online recruitment sites that participated in NORAS Winter 2005 were AndersElite, Blue Arrow, Brand Republic Jobs, CWjobs.co.uk, doctorjob.com, Eden Brown, eFinancialCareers, exec-appointments.com, fish4jobs, GAAPweb, InPharm Jobs, JimFinder, jobs.ac.uk, jobsgopublic, mad.co.uk, ManchesterOnline, OfficeRecruit.com, Prospects.ac.uk, s1jobs, jobs.Scotsman.com, jobs.telegraph.co.uk, Times Online – Jobs, Totaljobs.com and TipTopJob.

The results of NORAS Winter 2005 can be downloaded for free as a pdf by registering at www.noras.co.uk. Registering on the site also entitles recruiters to use the basic version of NORAS interactive – an online tool that makes it easy to compare job boards and calculates the number of candidates offered by each site – at no cost.

Article Two: Induction Programmes – What’s the benefit by Renata Minott

One of the major threats facing our industry today is the lack of new recruitment consultants to help drive our businesses forward. And when you have found the right person – how do you get them to stay? Recent research has found that one out of every 25 employees has walked out after starting a new job because of a poor induction.

It’s hard enough starting a new job but if introductions are rushed, and your induction programme involves a quick tour of the office and directions to the coffee machine and toilets – then you may find that your welcome mat quickly turns into a revolving door. An induction programme has to be just that – a programme – not a one-day whistle-stop tour of everything you feel a new joiner needs to know. The benefits of a good induction programme are wide ranging but in the main, the individual becomes productive within a much quicker time frame and retains a high level of motivation. An induction sets the right tone for the relationship between the employer and the employee. A bad induction could be the catalyst for someone to leave, especially if they already had doubts about the job.

So what should a programme cover and what’s the real benefit to the business? At Parker Bridge, we give all new consultants, irrespective of their experience, an intensive 4-week induction programme to give them the tools to recruit successfully. We cover our company history, our values and goals, recruitment as a career, our company policies such as, (diversity; equal opportunities etc); legislation, time management, systems and the entire parker Bridge recruitment process. Following completion of the programme, the new joiners can then feed back to their line manager so that the programme can be constantly evaluated.

And the benefits? New joiners can hit their desks running and achieve initial targets really feeling as if they have been given the right tools with which to do the job. They also feel part of the team and are much more familiar with the company and its systems. This in turn helps with staff turnover and retention. A thorough induction, linked to training, gives consultants the immediate ability to make placements and earn commission. It also enables them to represent the recruitment industry professionally from day one. You are giving your consultants the ability to become rounded business experts (not merely sales people) who offer consultative and informed advice to clients and candidates, a crucial differentiator in what has become a very overcrowded marketplace.
