Article One: 50% Growth in Online Recruitment Attracts Publishers’ Interest by Tim Elkington

The latest Internet Advertising Bureau research figures show that UK online recruitment revenues have grown by 50% for the second consecutive year. Online recruitment classified advertising was worth £182 million in 2005, up from £121 million in 2004 and £81 million in 2003.

This rapid growth in online recruitment revenues provides a clear explanation for the growing interest in job boards from traditional media owners. In addition to Jobsite, Associated New Media (part of the Daily Mail group) now also owns OfficeRecruit and Top-Consultant, while Trinity Mirror (publishers of the Daily Mirror) owns GAAPweb, Secs in the city and the Hot Group.

The investment in job boards by larger traditional media owners is not restricted to the UK. Fox Interactive Media, part of News Corporation, recently invested $3.5 million in SimplyHired.com, the US vertical search engine company that is aiming to build the world’s largest database of jobs. SimplyHired.com’s CEO Gautam Godhwani commented that "There's an incredible opportunity before us when you consider that 80 percent of employment dollars are still offline."

Even if this is true and 80% of recruitment advertising spend is offline, the pace of migration of recruitment advertising from offline to online is significant and shows no sign of slowing down. If online recruitment advertising experiences another year on year growth of 50% in 2005 then the value of UK online recruitment classified advertising will be £270 million in 2006 – more than the value of UK national press recruitment classified advertising.

Against this background we should expect some of the remaining independent job boards to be acquired by larger media owners as the media owners attempt to replace dwindling offline revenues with new online revenues. We should also expect movement on the price of placing jobs online and a possible conflict between traditional media owners that aim to increase the price of placing vacancies online and pure play job boards, possibly from the US, that could adopt a free online placement model or change their business models altogether, adopting a pay per click or even a pay per placement approach.

Whatever happens, you can be sure of three things – online recruitment advertising will keep growing, the market will see more acquisitions and investments and the evolution of the online recruitment business model is far from over!

Article Two: Job Board review: careers in construction by NES International

URL: www.careersinconstruction.com

Description
Construction recruitment website.

Appearance
The homepage contains considerably more information than other similar sites but despite this, does not appear cluttered or confusing in comparison. It successfully manages to display its logo, menu bar, job search and login features, drawing attention to areas of particular importance with the simple use of bold text. Discreet use of colour ensures the corporate image is subtly reinforced.

Navigation
The options displayed across the top of the homepage form dropdown menus, which when selected, take users to pages containing the information they need. Pages load quickly, with the slight exception of the ‘profiles’ page, which is slowed down by the number of company logos it contains. Upon selecting any of the job categories on the homepage, users are taken straight to a list of job vacancies specific to their discipline, meaning that just one action is necessary to view relevant jobs.

Contents
Advertisers appear to have provided thorough job specifications with each vacancy, with key details such as type of contract, salary, location and application deadline listed prominently at the beginning. Details of job role responsibilities provide candidates with enough information to be able to make well-informed judgements about their suitability for vacancies posted.

The career development advice, although somewhat limited, provides useful advice on CV writing, interview techniques and management tips and the company profiles provide comprehensive overviews of each company that is listed.

Clients & candidates
Users have access to two job search options; a keyword search and an advanced search that allows them to select criteria such as job type, job sector, location, contract type and salary to refine results. These enable candidates to quickly and accurately identify suitable positions and eliminate irrelevant ones.

Candidates are also able to register on the site, completing a personal profile and then opting to receive job alerts by email. By choosing to receive these email alerts, candidates have an additional tool for keeping up to date with the market, ensuring they know about the opportunities available when they arise.

Clients can subscribe as advertisers but as there is no candidate database, searching for potential applicants isn’t possible. There is a mention of a service whereby CVs are available to recruiters but only as part of the candidate registration process, not with regards to client facilities.

Conclusion
The job specifications that accompany each vacancy are presented clearly with key points highlighted for quick reference. Users encounter few (if any) difficulties while navigating the site, making their overall experience of the site positive.

Careers in Construction successfully provides recruitment assistance to job seekers and employers, with its job search facility and client advertising function. From a client perspective, it would benefit from a searchable database of candidates.

As the site is owned by Emap, all print media advertisements in their publications can be replicated online to increase exposure and response levels.
