Loooong Awards Shortlists…

Normally when you are a finalist for an award you can shout about it and be incredibly pleased with yourself.  What happens though if you are a finalist for an award alongside 17 other “finalists”?   I think of the shortlist for an awards event rather like a shortlist for a recruitment campaign.  In my opinion clients like to see a shortlist of more than two candidates but less than seven.

The other problem with such enormous shortlists is that it doesn’t give me much to blog about…. pop over and take a look at 170+ companies who are the best of the best…. not exactly coffee break reading – you are going to need to forgo lunch to work your way though those.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying these companies aren’t great (I wouldn’t know – I’ve not had time to look at them all yet); what I’m saying is that it’s a shame there aren’t just five or six in each category.

However, I do always like to look at the Personality of the Year category and the Unsung Hero category (oh, by the way it’s the Onrec awards I’m talking about).  In my opinion Dan McGuire has the biggest personality with David Spencer-Percival a close second.  In terms of unsung hero – Stephen O’Donnell is mine although Mike Powell is a cool chap too!

PS, Before I get the expected backlash I’m not slating the actual awards either – I think it’s a great honour to get an onrec award and I know the judges put a lot of hard work in to ensure the best company/individual wins.

But honestly, does anyone think 170 finalists is a good thing?!
