When I used to work for a recruitment agency in the 90’s it was totally normal for the client to specify the sex and age of the ideal candidate. I’m sure on occasions, although never to me, they specified the ethnicity. In the twenty-first century this is all illegal and unacceptable. But have things really changed? Last week I was chatting with someone looking for a new hire and he said “I could do with a chap – we’ve got an office full of women”. As a recruiter where do you go from there?

I recall having to reword an advert for electronics factory assembly workers, some 20 years ago, as “Good with your hands” was deemed to be sexist, as it clearly meant women only. I ended up putting “Must be manually dexterous”.
Surely not all men have fat fingers!!
