What to do if you have had an accident at work

All work places are hazardous environments and the occasional accident is inevitable wherever you work. If you are unfortunate enough to have an accident while at work it is important that you follow the correct procedures, and these should be provided to you by your employer, however here is a general guide to help prepare you just in case.

The first thing to do is get medical attention. Many employers have first aiders who can help you, but if you have a significant injury then you should also visit your GP or go to the A&E department of your local hospital. You should ensure that they are clear that it was a work related accident, and that its details are entered into your medical records.

It is vital that you report your accident to both your immediate boss and the health and safety officer at your workplace. Even if the accident appears to be very minor you must still report it ideally on the day that it happened or at the most within 48 hours.

Make sure that the details are recorded in the accident book and then sign the entry. Although all companies are required by law to keep an accident book, if your firm does not have one, then you should detail your accident in a letter and send it to your employer.

You may also need to complete a RIDDOR Report (short for Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) if your accident means that you will be off work or incapacitated for at least seven days after the accident happened.

You should ensure that you record as many details as you are able to about the accident including sketches if they help to clarify the situation; if you have a camera phone then take a picture too. Also note the names of any witnesses to the accident.

Finally, if you have suffered a work related accident then you might be entitled to compensation, whether for your injuries, loss of earnings or even loss of your job, so you should contact a specialist legal firm such as Express Solicitors as soon as possible.
