1. Talk to your family and friends; let them know what you are doing. They can advise, support and encourage you. They may also know possible future customers.

2. Do your homework, look at local competitors. Is there business out there that you can get? Is there enough demand for candidates?

3. Think before you spend, what do you need? Do you really need it? For example, do you need an office when you have the internet at home already?

4. Do not get locked into long term agreements with suppliers. You will need suppliers; if the supplier’s service is that good they will not need to lock you in to any agreement.

5. Look at joining a trade association, they can offer much needed support and networking. They may also provide you with documents that can be very expensive you need at no cost to yourself.

6. Stick to the sector you know, your existing knowledge will only help you grow quicker

7. Set realistic targets for yourself. A successful recruitment agency is not going to happen overnight. If you set yourself to high targets and you do not achieve them they you will get frustrated.

8. Remember is you are still a recruitment consultant not just a business owner, if you are have been successful working for another agency then you will need to put in the same effort and then some as you did previously.

9. Create a marketing plan. This should include listing possible clients, Deciding on a marketing approach (Such As Email, Letter and Telephone Calls) and producing marketing materials including logo and a website.

10. Place Contractors / Temps, they will provide you with very welcome weekly income. An income that will keep you going whilst you are waiting for payment for permanent invoices.
