We had a nice lively #rechangout today! We were joined by Mike Taylor, MD of Web Based Recruitment and Matt Alder, Digital, Social and Mobile Strategist at MetaShift and Founder of ThreeSparks to discuss “How should recruiters be using mobile?” Alan Whitford, our host for the shows, took part from inside a parked car (yes really!) and was joined (online) by Mark Stephens (Technology in Recruitment Alliance and F10 Group founder) and Louis Welcomme from Colleague Software. I spent my time trying to keep up with the Twitter channel.
It’s well worth watching the video to pick up all the detail (sorry our new “elevator pitches” go on a bit at the start!).
Some of the content covered (plus some blogs I thought might be useful) included:
- What’s essential on a mobile enabled website
- Why to build a separate mobile site: Choosing between responsive web design and a separate mobile site & Separate mobile site vs. responsive design
- What about mobile apps for recruitment: Mobile Sites Win the Battle Against Apps But Leave an Apply Time bomb & Decline in Mobile Recruiting Apps
- Why corporates should bother with mobile: Why Your Recruiting Needs to Go Mobile and How to Do It
- Why should agencies even bother with mobile: Why you should be using mobile recruitment
- What’s adaptive design: What is the difference between responsive vs. adaptive web design?
- Are jobseekers thumb happy (I wrote this blog previously – but Matt Alder says I’m wrong and that mobile applications are a higher quality): How Jobseekers find work using Mobile
- Using SMS/push notifications (the key point here is that yes, they are good for keeping in touch and for continuing a relationship but not great for mass advertising of roles): Nearly 90% of recruiters seek candidates by SMS, 90% get reply in 3 minutes
- The opportunity to use video on mobile
- Mobile stats: Statistics on mobile usage
It’s also worth checking out content from the Mobile Recruiting Strategies online conference that Mike Taylor recently ran.
The main takeaways from the hangout were
a) Acknowledge you need a mobile presence and do something about it.
b) instead of thinking about how to adapt your existing online presence consider what you would do if you were approaching it fresh
Basically Embrace Mobile – Don’t Ignore it!
Massive thanks to Matt and Mike for taking part. The next hangout will take place from our Technology Conference on 5th June. That is bound to be challenging for Louis to run (and I’m hoping Alan won’t feel the need to go and sit in his car to host it!!)
