Just seen this on the BBC website saying “there is an average of 10 jobseekers for every vacancy advertised in UK jobcentres…”
If I could find the link I could point you to the other article I read saying about 3000 people recently applying for 150 jobs advertised at a zoo (oh, actually I have found the article). It always surprises me how many people want to work at a zoo where a key part of the job has to be cleaning up animal poo.
Anyway, I digress. The BBC article goes on to say … “TUC said that while 10 unemployed people were chasing every advertised job in January of 2009, a year earlier it was only four per vacancy.”
This fits in with feedback I get from recruiters saying that a major bane of their current role (apart from the lack of actual vacancies) is sifting through the applications they are getting. However, the silver lining for the recruitment industry is that for many smaller HR departments an 150% increase in applications is too much to handle and reason enough to consider retaining a recruitment consultant.
