Would you take a salary cut to save a colleague?

A recent survey from executive search consultancy GRS said that
“Only 52% of City workers would cut their hours to save a colleague’s job.  In an online poll of 2,000 City professionals, 1,044 said they’d rather cut their hours than see a colleague lose their job, while 956 said they’d refuse to cut their hours.”
Only 52%?  I actually thought that was quite a generous figure.  Considering a) there will be a percentage of people who don’t think they are earning enough currently to allow them to drop their hours b) there will be a percentage of people who don’t like any of their colleagues and c) there will be a percentage of people who wouldn’t cut their hours to save a colleague’s life!
Maybe I’m just a little cynical!
