I’ve known of Derek Pilcher for absolutely ages. He’s one of those industry bods who has been around for years (in a good way!) but somehow our paths have never actually crossed. Derek is ex Sales Director of Monster.co.uk and before that was at Stepstone. He’s now UK MD of TheLadders.co.uk
So, last week we scheduled a quick conversation so he could fill me in on how TheLadders plan to take the UK by storm. TheLadders have a US parent company that’s been running since 2003 and who now have over 2 million jobseekers in their target market. These are executives in the £50,000 plus salary bracket. In June they were number one in the Executive Jobs market (overtaking exec-appointments in terms of traffic). Even the FT.com featured an article on why FT.com visitors were 7 times more likely to visit TheLadders than any other career site.
They are currently offering recruiters a one week free trial of "RecruitLadder Premium". This gives access to a talent database which currently totals in excess of 117,000 senior executives. Another Jobs board! how original.
I have been signed up to The Ladders for a few weeks now and I have to say the service is tainted by a tendency to send too many emails (I have been getting the same job day after day) and also the fact that you have to pay to view full job details. I can sympathise with their argument that having to pay eliminates time wasters, but on principle I believe you should not be charging job seekers (however senior they may be) to view job adverts.
The Ladders makes all kinds of exaggerated claims. If you look at http://www.alexa.com and compare them with exec-appointments.com or even executivesontheweb.com their traffic is not in any way higher than exec-appointments.
