It’s still illegal – even if it’s on “just on facebook” you know

I run a private (ish) local Facebook group with about 1,000 members and last night someone posted this job advert:

discrimination

It was immediately highlighted to me by one of the moderators as containing sexual discrimination.  However, not everyone agreed.  The person who posted it honestly did not know what they’d done wrong and more than one person said to me “well, it’s only on Facebook”.

However, I am of the view that, no matter where it is posted, it’s still is actually a job advert and should therefore be accountable in the same way any other job advert is. What is your view?”

By the way if you have experienced discrimination, you can get help from the EASS discrimination helpline.

  1. I agree that discriminatory language should always be avoided, for the benefit of all concerned.
Furthermore, Facebook doesn’t exist in some virtual country that isn’t governed by our laws. If the person posting, the intended audience and the location of the job are all in the UK, then our recruitment advertising laws apply. More than that, common sense applies everywhere.
