Over the years since TBOS began we’ve worked with countless recruiters looking to set up their own agency and we’ve had the chance to notice plenty of patterns. One of the biggest of those is that there are two main points in the year where the number of recruiters looking to start their own agency spikes.
New Year, New Start
First of these is January, when recruiters have had time over the Christmas and New Year break to think about the coming year. They look over profit figures for their agency and ask themselves if they can handle this under their own agency name.
January also sees directors rolling out their plans and targets for the year; recruiters often move to their own agency if they strongly disagree with these plans.
Summer Reflections
The second time of the year where we see an increase in our enquiry levels is September. The holiday season, roughly mid-June to early September, has a similar effect to January.
It’s pretty clear that when a recruiter has a chance to relax on holiday away from the fast-paced world of recruitment they take the chance to evaluate their future and start to wonder if an agency of their own could eventually allow them to live that lifestyle.
Returning to work can see frustrations build, especially if the recruiter has exceeded targets or sees the agency as missing untapped potential in the industry.
We’ve noticed that September is a pretty good time to start a new agency; it gives you time to get systems into place (website, database, finance arrangements, back office, etc.) and build client relationships during the first three months – and the agency’s ready to push strongly for the first full year of trading!
As you prepare for your summer holiday this year, remember that it’s a perfect time to think about your future in recruitment – and whether you should be going up in the world.
