There really are people out there who don’t believe recruiters are worth their fees! And they will do anything to get out of paying. Over at recLAW they’ve heard it all and here are some of the most common:
“Recruiters just sort through CVs for a living, they didn’t earn their fee”.
This, of course, begs the question, why don’t they all do their own recruitment then? Because of course, it’s not that easy! You have unrivalled access to talent at speeds beyond any hiring client and are well versed in the potential hiccups along the recruitment process and how to solve them.
“It’s just an introduction, they didn’t do any real work”.
It seems they genuinely believe you just have a filing cabinet full of CVs*, divided into sectors and industries and you just pull and few out and send them on.
*90s flashback alert.
“Everyone knows recruiters are target driven and they just sent us candidates that don’t fit”.
We know you wouldn’t last long as a recruiter if you placed candidates just to hit targets, but none of them lasted in the job. If a client claims this, and you know you’ve sent them candidates with the right skills and experience, red flags should be waving!
“They don’t know anything about the roles they are recruiting for or the market we’re in”.
This one is puzzling because, well, whose responsibility is it to inform the recruiter about the role? And if the client is correct in this assumption, they really only need to look at themselves to correct the situation. They can believe that the recruiter is just as frustrated! If you are getting messages or feedback like this before the role is filled, there’s a chance they are already lining up excuses not to pay you. Make sure you’re keeping records and evidence of your work.
“We already knew the Candidate”
Whether they met the candidate at a networking event, through previous recruitment, or someone in the company used to work with them, it doesn’t matter. They asked you to recruit and you did the groundwork and made the connection between the two at the right moment.
We know that good recruiters know their market inside out and work really hard to match their clients up with the best candidates.
