I hear you work in Recruitment…

This weekend I was at the wedding of wonderful friends.  The bride owns a search and selection company in Berkshire where I used to work before UK Recruiter became my life.

I was chatting with the DJ before the party got started and he asked me what I did for a living.  People outside the industry (and perhaps some within it) glaze over when I say I write a newsletter for recruiters.  His lack of interest didn’t stop me (well the wine had been flowing!) so I gave him my full career history.  I mentioned that I used to work with the bride at her recruitment consultancy.  Then he said those dreaded words… “ah, that could be handy”.  He was looking for a new job.  I was slightly thrown as I didn’t think anyone at the wedding specialised in entertainment artists.  However, I quickly recovered my composure as I realised that perhaps DJ-ing wasn’t his full time job.   Anyway, to cut a long story a little shorter, it turned out that he was a senior executive at a very well respected telecoms firm. I quickly ran off to find Emma (one of the world’s Best Recruiters and a guest at the wedding) to facilitate introductions.  I wonder if I’ll get commission on the placement fee?

It’s fairly obvious really, but don’t forget good candidates are all around us.  Just keep your eyes, and more importantly ears, open and you’ll be bumping into “walking placements” everywhere you go.

Of course, I assume Emma was collecting business cards on the dance floor, ready to pitch for business this morning.  It’s not just candidates that are all around us!
