Revolution Afoot in Recruitment

Changes to both the jobs market and the growth of online technologies means that recruitment companies are making changes to their working practices to meet the demands of both employers and job candidates.

The economic situation in the UK has resulted in a big drop in permanent positions and the growth of more flexible employment options such as interim workers and contractors. As a result, recruitment agencies have had to become much more responsive and make use of social networks like LinkedIN to target appropriately skilled candidates in a timely manner.

REC, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation in the UK published a report last month stressing the importance of social media and technology.

Les Berridge said: “The Recruitment 2022 report from REC technology gives a valuable insight into how recruitment and the candidate experience can be dramatically improved through the use of technology.”

“There are huge opportunities for recruiters who specialise in a particular industry who are willing to engage with prospective candidates though the ever evolving range of digital channels available. The ability to source, distil, interpret and publish content will be king – and recruiters across the industry need to innovate to remain competitive.”

The report highlights that one in five job searches are now carried out by a smartphone. It also shows the importance of a recruiter’s reputation online. The growth of social media means disgruntled candidates can post negative experiences of a recruitment process in the public domain which can damage an employer’s reputation.

The growth of mobile enabled recruitment has already been taken on board by graduate recruiters as they aim to attract the best of the new generation Y talent to their organisations.

Adidas and Barclays have been earlier adopters of new technologies for their graduate recruitment campaigns. Both companies have developed apps for their graduate recruitment campaigns. Candidates are able to submit their CVs via the app, learn about the companies, check their job application status and receive ‘push’ notifications for new job opportunities.

CapGemini, a major global technology company has also embraced social media as a means to attract the best talent. Each year they run a large campaign for IT recruitment London graduates.

Forward-thinking companies like CapGemini use a range of social media including making use of engaging videos on YouTube designed to tell jobseekers about the company and the range of jobs available. They also make use of both Twitter and Facebook to connect with candidates by tweeting job openings, closing dates for applications and other related news to their followers while they hold question and answer sessions on Facebook.
