Beyond 9 to 5: Your career guide for the digital age – book review

BeyondNinetoFiveI’ve been reading Ade McCormack’s new book Beyond 9 to 5: Your career guide for the digital age.  Ade is an advisor, keynote speaker and author on the digital economy. His experience with many of the world’s leading brands extends over three decades and almost thirty countries across many sectors.

This book is looking at how the world of work is changing and how understanding the drivers that are shaping tomorrow’s jobs will equip you to make better ‘career’ decisions.   He talks about how the industrial era model of work is crumbling and how those trying to maintain an industrial era career in the digital age are starting to crumble too as they struggle to cope with the new realities.

Whilst Beyond 9 to 5 is written primarily for those who are about to enter the world of work it is equally useful for those mid-career who are starting to realise that the skills that have taken them to this point in their career are not the same as those that will keep them economically relevant and fulfilled going forward.  It is also relevant for any recruiter wanting to ensure they are up to date with the needs of their clients and could help agency recruiters offer a more consultative approach to clients.

I found the book to be incredibly well researched and very comprehensive and contains many interesting insights.  It certainly gives you the momentum and advice needed to “design your career”. I noticed a quote in one of the book reviews was especially relevant to how I felt about the book: “It arms the reader with the tools necessary to move with the times; a must-read for anyone starting out on their career, or mid-way through and ready to adapt!”.
