This post by Recruitment Funding Solutions is part of our blog series, “The One Thing Recruitment Leaders Should Change Right Now”.
AI is not coming to recruitment. It is already here. The tools are evolving quickly, the adoption is accelerating, and for many agencies, the efficiency gains are real and welcome. But alongside the genuine benefits, something important is being overlooked: the value of human judgement, and what happens when we start replacing it rather than supporting it.
If I could ask every recruitment leader to change one thing right now, it would be this. Stop treating AI as the destination and start treating it as the vehicle.
Recruitment has always been a people business. Clients choose to work with you because of trust built over time. Candidates engage with you because a conversation with the right person at the right moment made a difference. Those things do not happen by accident, and they cannot be replicated by an algorithm, however sophisticated.
There are legitimate concerns worth paying attention to. AI-generated CVs are making it genuinely harder to assess candidate credibility. Automated screening is moving faster than the humans overseeing it, and good candidates are being filtered out before anyone has had the chance to properly evaluate them. Assessment processes are becoming more efficient on paper but less considered in practice. Add to this the unresolved questions around GDPR compliance in AI-driven hiring, an area the Information Commissioner’s Office has already begun examining, and the picture becomes more complex still.
Faster is not always better. In recruitment, a poor hiring decision costs everyone.
The leaders I have most respect for in this industry are not the ones ignoring AI, nor the ones chasing every new tool. They are the ones who have been deliberate about where technology genuinely adds value and where it does not. They use it to cut down on admin, speed up processes and surface better information. But the judgement calls, reading a client brief properly, understanding what a candidate actually needs, knowing when something does not feel right, those stay with their people.
At RFS, we have tried to take the same approach in how we run our business. Technology helps us work more efficiently and gives our clients better visibility of their funding positions. But when someone picks up the phone with a problem, they speak to a person who knows their business. That combination of good systems and genuine relationships is what we think service should look like.
The agencies that grow well over the next few years will be those that use AI to free up their people, not replace them. In a sector built on relationships, the human touch remains the point of difference worth protecting.
