A brand new £100m project at Manchester Airport will ensure that more than 1,800 jobs are to be created in the area in the coming ten to fifteen years thanks to a new logistics hub which is being built close to the current cargo centre.
The new facility is designed to attract companies from all over the world, and will form part of the £650m Airport City project in Manchester. 1.4m square feet of cargo space will be created, with a number of construction posts also becoming available in addition to the 1,800 jobs at the finished logistics hub. Airport chiefs hope that the new hub will increase international trade and create efficient supply chains for the city of Manchester.
With over 107,000 tonnes of mail and freight imported and exported through Manchester in 2011, it is the fourth-busiest cargo airport in the United Kingdom. With more growth projected, the new hub will eventually replace the existing cargo centre with 1.5m square feet of office space, 2,500 hotel beds and a suite of retail and leisure facilities.
Leisure and retail as an industry promises to create around 20,000 jobs in the North West over the next fifteen years, offering hope and prospects in an area of the country which traditionally suffers from high unemployment. As part of the larger project to make Manchester a city of trade and innovation, the creation of new career opportunities will be vital to the city’s continuing success in this field.
Current figures show that the North West accounts for approximately 60% of the UK’s industrial output, of which most is exported to other countries. The adjacent World Freight Terminal will ensure that Manchester continues to be a growing hub for import and export in the UK.
Greater Manchester’s new Enterprise Zone, which was designated by the government in March 2011, is centred around the Airport City area of Manchester, designed to turn the city into a global business hub. The 116-hectare Enterprise Zone is geared up to become one of the largest employment sectors in the North West of England over the next ten to fifteen years.

The development programme will be situated on a 36.9-hectare site next to junction 6 of the M56, with medium and small logistics units ranging between 7,500 and 200,000 square feet in size. The new hub project is currently at the planning stage, with development work expected to begin shortly.
