The Recruitment Rule I’d Break: Winning New Clients is the Biggest Driver of Growth.

This post by Vince Seddon of Simplicity in Business is part of our blog series, “The Recruitment Rule I’d Break”.

If there’s one recruitment rule, I’d challenge, it’s the belief that winning more clients is the biggest driver of growth.

After more than two decades working alongside recruitment businesses, I’ve seen countless agencies achieve record sales while still feeling under pressure. The reason? Growth isn’t determined by how many clients you win; it’s determined by how well your business can support that growth.

Recruitment is unlike many other industries. You can make a placement today, but not receive payment for 30, 60 or even 90 days. During that time, you’re still paying salaries, investing in your team, delivering for clients and looking for the next opportunity. It’s a business model where cash flow often dictates how quickly you can grow, regardless of how successful your sales team is.

That’s why I believe agencies need to shift their focus away from simply chasing new business and start thinking more strategically about the quality of their growth.

Are your clients paying on time? Do you have the cash flow to hire your next consultant when the opportunity arises? Are your credit control processes robust enough to protect your margins? Are you spending valuable time collecting invoices when you could be building stronger client relationships?

These are the questions that separate sustainable growth from short-term success.

The most successful recruitment businesses I’ve worked with don’t just celebrate new client wins; they’ve built strong operational foundations that allow them to grow with confidence. They understand their cash flow, manage risk effectively, invest in the right support and make decisions based on long-term sustainability rather than short-term turnover.

Winning new clients will always be an essential part of recruitment. But it shouldn’t be the only measure of success.

If I could replace one rule with another, it would be this:

Don’t focus on winning more clients. Focus on building a business that’s capable of supporting more clients.

When you combine strong sales with healthy cash flow, efficient operations and the confidence to invest in growth, that’s when recruitment businesses truly begin to scale. Sustainable growth isn’t driven by sales alone; it’s driven by the strength of the business behind them.
